Should Single Mothers Get A Free Maid Twice A Month?

Should Single Mothers Get A Free Maid Twice A Month?

Happy Sunday, beauties! It’s Zion here, founder of The Shenanigans Club, and welcome back to Morning Coffee.

Do you ever feel like you’re drowning in a never-ending cycle of household chores? Fold this, vacuum that, wash the dishes for the 4th time, reorganise the wardrobe after your kids have tossed clothes around in the rooms, left their shoes in the middle of hallway.

The Never-Ending Cycle of Household Chores

Girls! Just hazards everywhere! It feels like there no end in sight. This is literally a daily thing we have to do and if you don't your home looks like World War 3 has hit it! I mean, honestly, when does it stop? It feels like it'll only stop when the kids finally move out! And when is that? Considering the mess with housing and what not. Let me not even start with that!

Now I get what you might be thinking right, how can I complain with just one child?

Parenting: Exhausting at Any Number

Even though I only have only one, parenting is still a lot of work and can be exhausting, no matter the number of kids. To the expectant mothers reading this, welcome to the soon-to-be motherhood club! Good luck on your journey; I'll be here cheering you on and seriously praying for you because your going to need it!

Anyway, back to our little chit chat: Last Sunday, while I was once again elbow-deep in dishes, it hit me shouldn’t single mothers get a maid service from the government?  I can already hear the suggestions: “Just clean as you go!” “Get a dishwasher!” or “Find a rich man in Belgravia or Mayfair!”

But honestly, even with a dishwasher or a wealthy partner, the exhaustion would still be very real. It really doesn't matter if you’re working full-time, part-time, or are a stay-at-home mum, we juggle so much, right? How incredible would it be to spend a weekend just relaxing with a cup of tea, a few hob nob biscuits and doing absolutely nothing until dinner?

The Cleaner Chronicles: Trials and Triumphs

Since winning the lottery is like a one-in-a-million chance (a girl can dream, right?), I decided to hire a cleaner to come by every month for a deep clean. But before committing, I did a trial run because, let’s be honest, you can’t just let anyone into your home. You really have to be careful when choosing new home maintenance workers.

My mum had an amazing cleaner years ago who left to return to Brazil, and she was so lovely! She was devastated when she left. She trusted her so much that she’d even leave her alone in the house while she ran errands. When she hired a new cleaner after her last one leaving, things went wrong within the first 20 minutes! The cleaner used wood polish on my mum’s leather sofas, and it was an absolute mess! It’s funny now looking back, but at the time, my mum was p****d!

I mean, this was basically how my mum reacted! Haha! We live and learn, right? My mum now has a new cleaner and she's great from what I heard.

Finding the Perfect Cleaner: My Experience

I finally hired my cleaner through a handy website where you can get real time quotes from multiple cleaners based on your needs. All you have to do is fill out a quick form, and cleaners get back to you within 15-30 minutes which is pretty cool because I thought it would take 2 business days. This process felt so seamless, and it’s how I found the cleaner I now use every two months for a deep clean.

For anyone curious, they don’t just help with cleaners you can find handymen, electricians, and other professionals too. It’s worth checking out if you need help maintaining your home. Click Here for more details if you’re interested.

Tips for Hiring a Cleaner

Here’s what worked for me:

  • Start small: Trial them first for a couple of hours to see their style and reliability.

  • Stick with one cleaner: Building rapport creates trust and a smoother experience.

  • Work directly if possible: Once you build trust, you can avoid agency fees by paying the cleaner directly. (Just don’t pay cash; use bank transfers for added security.)

This arrangement benefits both parties, and honestly, most cleaners are happy to work this way. Just ensure everything is documented and secure in case of issues.

What Do You Think?

Now I’m turning the floor over to you:

  • Do you think the UK government should offer free maid services for single mothers, especially those with no family or partner support?

  • How do you manage household chores and childcare if you don’t have help?

  • Have you found cleaning services you absolutely swear by?

  • What are your tips for staying on top of household duties while juggling everything else in life?

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below. I’d love to hear how you make it all work and whether you think government schemes like this could actually make a difference.

Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to check back for more Morning Coffee. Ciao!
